Monday:

Bellringer: Policy of Détente: Can you explain what might be happening in this picture?

Standards: US: 19C: Describe the effects of the Watergate political scandal, and how it changed the views of U.S. citizens concerning trust in the federal government and its leaders.

Big Idea: Political Cartoon Analysis and Notes

Activity: Notes will be given about the general idea of the Watergate Scandal, and what it did to the United States. Students will then walk around the room and examine 8-10 political cartoons regarding the Watergate Scandal and Nixon, and describe people, places, and events of the picture; and then describe what the general idea of the cartoon is.

Tuesday:

Bellringer: Can you explain some of the people, places, and events of this political cartoon and what it refers to?

Standards: US 2B: Identify the major eras in U.S.  History from the 1970’s-1980’s; and describe their defining characteristics.

Big Idea: Presidential Speeches

Activity: Students will be split into four groups with each group representing either the Foreign or Domestic policies of presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter. Students will have to answer 10 questions on their paper about the policies. After students have answered they will come to the front of the classroom and be asked those questions from the other students in the class. Each student being asked a question has to answer the questions they are responsible for.

Wednesday:

Bellringer: Can you explain one of the foreign or domestic policies of Gerald Ford or Jimmy Carter? (Word Bank)

Standards: US 2B: Identify the major Eras in U.S. History from the 1970’s-1980’s; and describe their defining characteristics?

Big Idea: Ford/Carter policy matching and Quiz

Activity: Students will receive a small set of cards with just the name of the policy, and a set of cards with a small definition of the policy. Students will then have to match the policy with the definition, and then write down on their paper which president it belongs with. Students have 4 of each domestic and Foreign policies. After ALL students have finished they have to work quietly on a 10 problem quiz about the domestic and Foreign policies. (The quiz is a fill in the blank). Students may use information that they have had over the past two days.

Thursday:

Bellringer: Describe one of the foreign or domestic policies, and how it impacted the United States the most, and why.

Standards: US 10B: Describe Ronald Reagan’s leadership in domestic and international policies, including Reaganomics and Peace Through Strength.

Big Idea: Reagan’s Domestic/Foreign Policy walk-through stations.

Activity: Students will have a piece of paper that they will have to answer; Who, What, When, Where, How, and Why of the policies of Ronald Reagan; which will be placed around the room. There will be a total of 10 different policies that the students have to write about. There will also be a video showing the assassination attempt on Reagan, as well as his speech in Berlin. After students have finished writing down the 6 categories, at the bottom of their page they have to write which one of his domestic and foreign policies impacted the United States the most, and why.

Friday:

Bellringer: Bellringer Quiz

Standards: US 10E: describe the causes and key organization and individuals of conservative resurgence of the 1980’s. Also US 10F: Describe significant societal issues of the this period (1980’s-90’s)

Big Idea: Rising 1980’s Stations

Activity: Students will rotate from station to station answering 4-5 questions about each station category. There will be a total of 6 stations with a paragraph of information, and pictures at each station that students have to use to answer the questions.
